This paper is divided into four sections. Each section has a maximum of three questions. The total number of questions in this paper will be 16. All questions carry equal marks and each question carries 4 marks. The syllabus for this paper has been designed on the basis of the latest edition of NCFLE curriculum and course outlines for BSC Nursing 2nd Year students. Students are advised to read over each topic thoroughly so that they may gain an integrated understanding of the subject matter before attempting to answer any question from it in the examination hall

Nursing Study on Cardiovascular System

The cardiovascular system is made up of the heart and the blood vessels. The heart consists of four chambers—two atria and two ventricles. The atria receive oxygen-depleted blood from the body, while the ventricles pump it out to be circulated throughout the body as oxygen-rich blood. Arteries carry blood away from your heart to other organs in your body, while veins carry blood back toward your heart.

The cardiovascular system can be affected by both physical changes such as high cholesterol and diabetes, or by diseases like cancer which can spread throughout all parts of this system (including tumors on various organs). Other issues include aneurysms or blockages within arteries that prevent adequate circulation; these most often occur in people with genetic predispositions like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IIIa (EDS-IIIa). Intrinsic Factors (Age)

The intrinsic factors that affect the structure and function of body are age, race, gender, and genetic makeup. The age factor has a direct influence on the body’s structure and function. It is known to be one of the most important factors in nursing because it directly affects a patient’s health status. Nursing involves interaction with people from different cultures, ages and backgrounds; therefore it becomes imperative for nurses to understand how age affects human responses towards illness or injury.

Nursing students need to know about changes that occur with increasing age so that they can deal appropriately with them while caring for elderly patients as well as other adult patients (Hanning & Zwiallander 2004). The physiological changes which occur during aging process include decreased capacity for cell regeneration; decreased activity of enzymes; reduction in electrical potential across cell membrane; increased water content; reduced muscle mass due to less protein synthesis while there is more fat deposition (Clavaud & Chapman 2006).

  • The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is higher in men than women and this difference varies with age. The difference narrows as hypertension becomes more prevalent and smoking becomes less common. In the 40–54 year age group, CVD was twice as common among men compared with women whereas in those aged 85 years or over it was three times as high [1]. Women have a significantly lower prevalence than men for myocardial infarction (MI), angina pectoris, and stroke. Cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, diabetes mellitus type 2, hypercholesterolaemia, hypertension and smoking have an important impact on gender differences in CVD mortality rates [2].
