Colleges That Have Game Design Major

Want to design the next big game? The good news is that you can. There are plenty of colleges across the United States with game design majors. Here are some of them:

The University of Southern California

The University of Southern California is ranked as the number one game design school in the country. USC has a Game Design program that is part of their School of Cinematic Arts, and students can choose to major in Game Design or Game Art. The school also has a Game Lab and a Game Development Lab at their campus in Los Angeles, California.

Savannah College of Art and Design

Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit college located in Savannah, Georgia, United States. The college was founded in 1978, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school offers 28 majors at its main campus as well as locations across Georgia and online courses through SCAD eLearning. It has an enrollment of 5,000 students representing all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a private research university in Troy, New York, with two additional campuses in Hartford and Groton, Connecticut. Rensselaer is often cited as one of the world’s top-ten universities for its innovative research.

The university has seven schools including Engineering; Architecture; Management; Information Technology and Web Science; Arts & Humanities; Social Science and Policy Studies[1]; and Science[2]. It offers over 200 degree programs at the bachelor’s level alone.[3]

Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a private research university in Worcester, Massachusetts. WPI has a Game Design program and a game design degree to prepare students for their careers in the video game industry. The program is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The school offers an undergraduate minor in Computer Game Design as well as an interdisciplinary graduate degree that combines studies in computer science and human-computer interaction with an emphasis on gaming technology. The competitive curriculum focuses on developing technical skills while also providing students with business training needed to succeed in this competitive field.

DigiPen Institute of Technology

DigiPen Institute of Technology is a for-profit college with an undergraduate population of 2,500 students and a graduate population of 100 students. The school was founded in 1988 and is located in Redmond, Washington.

The game design program at DigiPen Institute of Technology offers several courses that explore the art, programming, business and history of games. Students who complete these courses can choose to major in game design or one of four other fields: animation & visual effects; computer science (CSC); media arts & sciences; or programming & software engineering.

Hampshire College

At Hampshire College, you can minor in game design. The department offers a bachelor of fine arts degree in game design with an optional concentration in either interactive storytelling or user experience. Students can also participate in the college’s Certificate Program for Designing Games and Playable Media, which consists of four courses—Principles of Game Design, Narrative Foundations, Interactive Storytelling and User Experience Design—and is open to students who have not declared a major.

Rochester Institute of Technology

RIT is a private university located in Rochester, New York. It has a game design program and is ranked as one of the top universities for game design.

Becker College

The liberal arts institution was founded as a women’s college in 1889 by Mary Augusta Becker, who was also the first president of the college. The institution became co-educational in 1973.

Becker College offers more than 30 majors to its undergraduate students, and has been named one of the “Best Northeastern Colleges” numerous times by The Princeton Review.

Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University is a private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

It was founded in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools.

Carnegie Mellon is organized into six undergraduate and graduate schools.
