Duke University School of Nursing offers a range of great programs at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels.

Nursing programs

Whether you’re interested in pursuing your nursing education online or at one of Duke’s campuses, there are a number of programs available:

• Bachelor’s degree program – this is the most popular track for students who want to become registered nurses (RNs) and work in hospitals. It takes four years to complete the program.
• Master’s degree program – this is a two-year degree that allows students to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), such as a nurse practitioner (NP).
• Doctorate program – RNs wishing to advance their careers may pursue doctorates by earning either a PhD or DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice). The former focuses more on research while the latter focuses more on clinical practice.

Undergraduate nursing

As a student in the undergraduate nursing program, you will be required to take various classes in your first year and beyond. You will also be expected to maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 during this time.

• Medical Surgical Nursing: This class is designed to help students understand medical and surgical nursing through lectures, discussions, hands-on practice and clinical teaching. The course aims to cover topics such as communication skills, pharmacology for nurses, legal issues in health care, ethical aspects of nursing practice and so on
• Transfer credit evaluation: The school offers transfer credits evaluation for students who have previously taken courses from other institutions or universities but wish to continue their studies here
• Nursing science: This class introduces students with basic concepts about how the human body works together with its environment while they learn more about health care systems around them

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (ABSN)

Duke University offers an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) degree that is designed for students who want to become registered nurses, pursue graduate education, or begin a career in healthcare. This program is offered on campus at Duke’s Durham, NC, campus and online.

The ABSN program does not require prior science course work and can be completed in as few as 15 months. Students spend the first two years taking courses that are considered the core components of nursing education: health promotion; pathophysiology; leadership, management and communication skills; community health nursing; biological sciences; social sciences; life span development across the lifespan; ethical practice within health care contexts and more. The last year will focus on clinical rotations where you complete fieldwork requirements while working toward becoming qualified as a registered nurse

Master’s-level nursing degrees

The MSN is a master’s degree in nursing, or alternatively it can be called an advanced nursing degree. The MSN is a terminal academic degree that represents the highest level of academic achievement in nursing (it signifies completion of graduate studies). In some cases, it may also signify eligibility for professional licensure upon completion of coursework requirements.

The MSN program provides additional knowledge and skills to those who have already earned their baccalaureate degree in nursing—either at Duke University or elsewhere. It typically requires two years to complete after earning your BSN; however, some schools offer accelerated programs that may take less time than this to complete.*

Master of Science (MS) in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner

The MS in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner is a terminal degree. It is offered online and the program length is two years. The purpose of this program is to educate nurses who want to become nurse practitioners in family practice and pediatric settings.

Doctoral-level nursing degrees

If you are looking for advanced nursing degrees, Duke offers a PhD in Nursing. The PhD program covers a broad range of topics including research and clinical practice. This degree provides the opportunity to conduct research and teach at the university level by conducting independent studies on your own project or topic of interest. Students who successfully complete this program have the option to pursue careers in academic settings as well as private industry settings where they will be able to continue their research into specialized areas of study.

If you are interested in learning about current trends in your field or becoming more specialized, Duke’s Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) program may be right for you. The DNP prepares leaders who design, implement and evaluate patient care across health systems while using evidence-based practices within an interprofessional team setting. All candidates must hold either an MSN or APRN certificate prior to applying for admission into the program; however, students do not need any prior work experience before entering this program
