Example Pico Questions Nursing

Example Pico Questions Nursing

Here are example PICO questions nursing related.

Pain

Pain is a symptom, not a disease.

  • It is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage.
  • Pain has been described as a message to stop doing something that is harmful. In fact, pain can be thought of as the body’s way of protecting itself from further injury or harm by signaling the brain that there is something wrong in the area where it hurts.

Infection

Infections are the leading cause of death worldwide. They affect all age groups, but are most common in the very young and very old. The symptoms of infection are often nonspecific; if you suspect that someone you know may be suffering from an infection, it’s important to keep a record of their signs and symptoms.

There are three broad categories of infections: bacterial, viral, and fungal (or parasitical). Each type requires a specific course of treatment; in some cases there may be multiple courses before the patient can be fully treated. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections by killing off bacteria that have entered your body through cuts or wounds on your skin; antivirals treat viruses by preventing them from replicating themselves inside your cells; antiparasitics treat fungal or parasitic infections by killing off those organisms that have invaded your body through open wounds or breaks in your skin such as insect bites or scratches from bushes.

Cancer

Cancer is a group of diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. The most common types of cancer are:

  • skin cancer,
  • breast cancer,
  • lung and bronchial cancer,
  • prostate cancer,
  • leukaemia (blood cancer), and * lymphoma.

Obesity

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health. Body mass index (BMI), which compares weight and height, is often used to diagnose obesity. The BMI categories are:

  • Underweight – less than 18.5
  • Ideal weight – 18.5-24.9
  • Overweight – 25-29.9
  • Obese – 30 or greater

PICO stands for:

  • Population. This is the group of people you’re studying. For example, nursing students might be interested in studying the relationship between injury and pain among young adults who play sports.
  • Intervention/exposure. This is what you are doing to your population or group of people, such as giving them a medication or exposing them to heat or cold etc. In our example above, this could be giving them pain relievers like ibuprofen so they don’t have any pain after an injury occurs while playing sports.
  • Outcome/effect (or dependent variable). This is what happens when something happens (intervention/exposure) to a person or group of people (population), such as if they take ibuprofen after being injured during sports and feel less painful than if no medication was given at all.

These are examples of PICO questions nursing that you can use to start your own research. Some of them are quite simple and straightforward, while others require you to do some digging into the literature. However, all of these questions are about important issues related to health care for people who need nursing care (or just want it!).
