The program also covers the importance of working collaboratively with the media in order to enhance awareness about public health issues. The final phase of this type of education is focused on teaching you how best to inform the general public about ways they can support or improve their own wellness.

The Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Public Health is designed to prepare the nurse to work in community settings, such as clinics, health departments and schools. Students who pursue this degree program will study both clinical and non-clinical aspects of public health. Students are required to complete a supervised practicum experience in a setting appropriate for the student’s career goals.

The practicum experience is a supervised work experience that is designed to give you an opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills as you complete the requirements for licensure/certification. It is a requirement of the master’s nursing public health program. The practicum experience will provide you with an opportunity to apply your newly acquired knowledge and skills in a variety of settings at local, state or national levels. To be successful in completing this requirement, it is recommended that students possess strong research skills, organizational abilities and effective communication skills.

Students are also required to complete an Applied Research Project.

The goal of this course is for students to apply the knowledge and skills gained in previous coursework, specifically in public health, epidemiology and biostatistics. Students will be expected to conduct a research project that requires a literature review of current literature related to the topic selected by each student. The final project should consist of an annotated bibliography that contains all sources cited as well as two papers: one paper which summarizes findings from their own work on their selected topic and another paper which describes how they came up with their research question and analyzed data collected during their study. Students will present these papers at our annual APHA conference during spring semester immediately following completion of their capstone course requirements (See Goals).

This experience can take place at any point throughout your program as long as it fits into your timeline with approval from your advisor or college dean (See Goals).

It’s important to know that neither of these tests are required for all programs, including Master’s degrees with a concentration in Nursing and Public Health.
