The MNS was created in 2016 by combining all four branches of the armed forces’ nursing services into one organization. The four previous branches were:

  • U.S Army Nurse Corps (ANC). The ANC was founded in 1901, but its roots go back to 1775 when male physicians first joined George Washington’s army as surgeons. The ANC was officially established on July 1, 1901; however, women had been serving as nurses since 1869 when Clara Barton began recruiting civilian nurses for battlefields during the Civil War. By World War II there were over 7500 ANC officers who served during both world wars and Korea before being integrated into US Army Medical Department (AMEDD). After 1959 only females could become commissioned officers for ANC until 1976 when “Army nurse corps” became “United States Army Medical Specialist Corps” with both male and female officers serving under its banner until 2005 when AMEDD became known simply as US Armed Forces Surgeon General’s Office (AFMSG).
