What is the Naval Research Enterprise?

The Naval Research Enterprise (NER) is a federally funded research and development center within the United States Navy. NER was founded in 1976 as a means of consolidating naval research efforts across the Department of the Navy. As of Fiscal Year 2016, NER has an annual budget of $1.4 billion. The mission statement of NER is to “conduct world-leading fundamental research and develop innovative technologies that enhance naval combat capability.”

Internship opportunities with NER are available for students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The internships offered through NER have different lengths and focus areas, from two weeks to six months. Internships can be done at any of the organization’s four locations: San Diego, California; Washington D.C.; Newport News, Virginia; and Dahlgren, Virginia.

The internship program

The Naval Research Enterprise (NER) internship program provides summer internships for undergraduate and graduate students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and other related fields.

The NER internship program offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in naval research and development laboratories. Interns may work on projects ranging from preliminary research to full-scale development. The program also provides an introduction to the naval research community and its many facets.

The NER internship program is open to undergraduate and graduate students at accredited colleges or universities in the United States. Internship applications are accepted every summer and are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Selected interns are notified in early June of their eligibility for the summer internship.

Internships at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) typically run from about 10 weeks to 12 weeks, with a two-week break between sessions. Interns typically receive a salary of $12 per hour, plus room and board. The NRL offers many opportunities for professional growth during the internship experience; internships culminate in a final project that can take any form desired by the individual interns.

The qualifications for the program

The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NERIP) is a six-week summer internship opportunity for college students majoring in engineering, science, or mathematics. The program provides hands-on experience in Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) laboratories and facilitates close mentorship from NRL personnel. The program is open to students from all U.S. colleges and universities, with preference given to undergraduate students.

To be eligible for the NERIP internship, applicants must have completed at least 3 quarters of coursework leading to a bachelor’s degree in an engineering, science, or mathematics field. Selected candidates will also be required to submit a résumé and undergo a telephone interview.

The NERIP internship offers participants the opportunity to gain officer leadership experience while developing their scientific research skills. Projects may include work on advanced sensor technology development; Advanced Materials Research; Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division experiments; acoustic detection and tracking systems; high-speed tactical aircraft modeling; and arms control research initiatives.

The Naval Research Enterprise (NERVE) Internship Program is designed for college seniors, recent graduates, and individuals with prior work experience in science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields. The program is open to U.S. residents and offers a paid summer internship at one of NERVE’s research laboratories located throughout the United States.

To be eligible for the Internship Program you must:
1. Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license or an equivalent government-issued photo identification card
2. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
3. Have completed at least one full year of undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university
4. Have graduated from high school or attained the equivalent level of education by the date of submission of application
5. Be no younger than 23 years old on the day of application
