Nursing Accreditation Programs

Nursing is a challenging field, and it’s important to find a program that will prepare you for success. When choosing an accredited nursing program, you’ll want to make sure that it’s recognized by one of the three main agencies: National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

NLNAC is a voluntary, self-regulatory body that accredits baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degree programs in nursing. Its primary mission is to ensure quality through programmatic review, peer review and evaluation of compliance with NLNAC policies and procedures. It is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an accrediting agency for schools of nursing (by virtue of its accreditation under Title IV).

Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) is the only accrediting agency for baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs in the United States. CCNE accredits over 1,300 nursing programs in baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels. These include traditional and distance education programs.

The purpose of CCNE is to assure quality nurse education by evaluating schools of nursing through a peer-review process that ensures standards are met; advancing knowledge about effective education practices; improving teaching methods; developing criteria for courses of study leading to initial licensure as RNs or LPNs; promoting health care access; providing leadership towards strengthening public confidence in the quality of health care practice.

Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)

The accrediting body for nursing education programs is the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), a private, non-profit organization that sets the standards for nursing education. ACEN is recognized by the US Department of Education and has been since 1971. It is also recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation.

Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA)

The COA is a national accrediting body for nurse anesthesia programs. It was founded in 1997 and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, as well as by several states and organizations within the nursing profession, including:

• The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)
• The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA)
• The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

When choosing an accredited nursing program, make sure it is recognized by the NLNRS, CCNE or COA.

The USDE recognizes over 1,400 accrediting agencies that accredit postsecondary education institutions across the country.

The US Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) also recognizes these three agencies as well as other accrediting agencies throughout the country for their contributions to ensuring quality education for veterans and their families.

The WHO Collaborating Centre on Nursing Education is also part of this collaborative effort with VA to improve nursing education programs in order to better serve both civilian and military populations
