The Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry is the official repository of MN nursing assistant license information. The registry collects and maintains comprehensive data on all licensed nursing assistants in the state, including individuals who have had their licenses revoked or suspended, who are under investigation for suspected wrongdoing, or who may not be practicing as licensed nursing assistants.

Apply to the Minnesota CNA Registry

You’ll need to apply for your nursing assistant license in Minnesota. It’s important to have a license if you’re going to work as an aide, so make sure you get started on the process of getting one as soon as possible!

To apply for a CNA registry in Minnesota, you will need:

• A high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Complete two years of college education at an accredited institution
• Pass the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX-PN)

Renew an Minnesota CNA License

You must renew your license every two years. You can apply for renewal by mail or in person at a health department office. If you are not a Minnesota resident, you must apply for renewal by mail and may not renew in person. The fee to renew is $50; out-of-state applicants pay $50 plus the cost of postage and handling.

The following requirements must be met in order to successfully complete the renewal process:

If you are a Minnesota CNA, your next step will be to challenge the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Competency Exam.

The purpose of this exam is to ensure that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform your job effectively. This includes providing safe and effective nursing care for patients in hospitals, assisted living facilities and other health care environments. To pass the exam, candidates must correctly answer at least 90% of questions on a computerized test consisting of 30 questions (1 hour). After passing the exam with a score of 75% or higher, candidates are eligible to apply for their Minnesota CNA Registry Card and license through their local County/City Health Department Office or Hennepin Technical College Regional Training Program site if they choose not go through one of these outlets themselves.
