Nursing Assistants in Minnesota must be licensed by the state’s Board of Nursing (MN). The MN Board of Nursing regulates the practice of nursing in specialties that include:

• Home Health Aide (HHA) and Community Health Aide (CHA)
• Patient Care Assistant (PCA), which includes Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), and Advanced Practice Nurse Assistant (APNA)

You must meet all requirements to obtain a license from the MN Board before you can legally work as an LPN or RN. You must also complete continuing education coursework on an annual basis to renew your MN license.

To qualify for the registry, you must:

• Be 18 years old or older
• Have graduated from high school or received a General Education Development (GED) certificate with at least a score of 2050 on the math section or 2250 on the reading section

You cannot be currently serving time in prison or jail; have been convicted of any crime other than petty misdemeanor offenses; been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces; been convicted by court martial of desertion from active duty service; been convicted by military court of being absent without leave during wartime service; committed an offense against children that results in physical injury to another person’s child under age 18 within five years before applying for registry certification; or used illegal drugs within two years before applying for registry certification.
