Resume Cover Letters Nursing

A cover letter is a great way to introduce yourself to a potential employer and highlight your qualifications. A nursing cover letter allows you to expand on the skills, experience, and education that make you an ideal candidate for the position.

How to Write a Nursing Resume Cover Letter (Plus Examples)

A cover letter is the introductory writing you send with your resume to a prospective employer. It’s an opportunity for you to introduce yourself and set expectations for what you can do for them.

Essentially, a cover letter is like a sales pitch: You have to quickly convince the hiring manager that he or she should read your resume, and then once they’re done reading it, hire you!

Cover Letter Example 1: Experienced Nurse

Use the same resume style as your resume.

Use the same formatting as your resume.

Use the same font as your resume.

Use the same font size as your resume.

Use the same font style as your resume.

The best way to do this is to find a template that matches up with what you have already created, or just copy and paste the text into another document, making sure to keep all of these elements consistent across all documents that make up one job application package (which includes both a résumé and cover letter).

Cover Letter Example 2: New Grad Nurse

As a new grad nurse, you may feel that your resume cover letter needs to be different from the one you use for a more experienced applicant. It doesn’t! A great cover letter can get past the initial screening process at any company. However, do keep in mind that employers may not be as impressed by your experience level as they are by your enthusiasm and passion for the job. Even if they don’t hire you, they will remember how much effort went into writing such an outstanding cover letter!

Here is an example of what might work well for someone who just graduated with their nursing degree:

Dear [insert hiring manager’s name here],

I am writing to express my interest in becoming part of [insert company name here]’s team as a registered nurse (RN). As evidenced by my recent graduation from [insert school name here]’s nursing program, I have proven myself capable of learning quickly and adapting easily to new situations. My experience working in hospitals alongside experienced nurses has given me valuable knowledge about top-notch patient care practices. Additionally, I have also developed strong leadership skills which allow me to take charge and guide others through difficult situations when needed.

I believe that these strengths would make me an asset to [insert company name here]. As an RN who has received top marks throughout school on clinical competency exams and clinical projects related both directly or indirectly with patient care issues (e.g., medication administration), I am confident that my abilities would play well within this environment while enriching both myself personally and professionally through continued growth opportunities provided by such an innovative organization like yours.”

Cover Letter Example 3: RN Case Manager

As a case manager, you’re responsible for coordinating all aspects of your client’s care and ensuring that they receive the best possible treatment. In this role, it is essential to be able to work well with others as you coordinate care across multiple departments.

Your ability to manage large amounts of information and process it quickly will help you succeed in this role. You should also have excellent communication skills as well as excellent organizational abilities in order to keep track of all the different details involved in coordinating medical care for your clients.

Case managers generally need a bachelor’s degree, but some employers may prefer experience over education requirements. The average salary for case managers was $48K per year in 2016 (BLS).

Cover Letter Example 4: Charge Nurse

As a charge nurse, you are responsible for managing all aspects of your unit’s nursing staff. You’ll be responsible for hospital or department policy, and providing quality care to patients under your supervision. The following cover letter template can be used as a guide when applying for this position:

Dear [name],

I’m excited about the opportunity to apply for the open charge nurse position at [hospital name]. My background in [relevant education] combined with my experience as a [relevant job title] has prepared me well for this role. I have extensive knowledge of medical terminology and procedures, which is essential in making sure that patients receive proper care across all areas of their treatment plan.”

Cover Letter Example 5: Director of Nursing Services

This is the fifth example of a cover letter. It is written for a Director of Nursing Services and contains the following sections:

  • A brief summary of your career accomplishments
  • A brief summary of your education
  • A brief summary of your skills
  • A list of professional references to contact with more information about you if necessary

The cover letter should be tailored for each job you apply for, but this sample can serve as a starting point.

If your resume is the introduction, then your cover letter is the first impression. It’s a chance to wow potential employers and demonstrate enthusiasm for their company.

But how do you make sure that every single one of your letters gets read? The key is to tailor it specifically to each job you apply for — and follow these tips:

  • Be concise

Cover letters are typically only a page long, so don’t go on too long about how much you love all things Disney or Game of Thrones (unless those things are relevant to the job). Keep your message focused on why this particular position appeals to you.

  • Organize everything by paragraph

Each paragraph should have one main point that supports your objective in applying for this position; avoid rambling off into tangents about unrelated topics unless they’re directly related (for instance, mentioning previous experience with customer service could be helpful if the job requires customer service). Presenting well-organized information will help keep readers engaged through their entire reading process instead of getting bored halfway through!
