DePaul University

DePaul University is a private, coeducational university in Chicago, Illinois. The main campus lies on the city’s lakefront within Lincoln Park (nicknamed the DePaul Campus), just north of Grant Park and east of Michigan Avenue, with an additional campus located in suburban Rosemont (the Loop Campus). DePaul’s athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA as members of the Big East Conference.

DePaul was founded as St. Vincent’s College by Sisters of Charity who came to Chicago from St Mary’s Parish on State Street to serve their new parishioners, the German immigrant population. It was established as an all women’s college and became co-ed in 1899 when men were admitted to its pre-nursing classes and then into nursing in 1909 under Sister Mestra Doris Regan (who went on to become Mother Mestra). In 1927 it became part of Loyola University Chicago , which was established by Jesuits at that time with St Ignatius College Prep now being named after John Baptiste Cardinal Garrigou-Lagrange .
