If you’re like me, you want to be a perfect nurse. You want to make sure that no one is ever unhappy with your work and that everyone knows how much effort you are putting into their care. You are willing to do whatever it takes for your patients even if it means working long hours or being on call for 24 hours straight.

That being said, I think it would be helpful for me to understand why this can be seen as a weakness as well as how I can overcome this particular weakness in my interview process so that the interviewer doesn’t discount me because of this trait.

It seems like many people would consider my perfectionism and workaholic tendencies as positive things; however, if the interviewer sees those traits as negatives instead of positives then they could impact whether or not I get hired.

You must learn to accept your mistakes. You are not perfect, and it is okay to make mistakes. Attempting to be perfect will only cause more stress and anxiety than you need, which is why it’s best to just let things go when they don’t turn out the way you wanted them to. This means forgiving yourself for making a mistake or two during the interview process, even if those mistakes seemed pretty big at the time (e.g., saying something inappropriate).

  • Overconfidence. You might be the best candidate out there, but you shouldn’t come across as if you know it. A good way to avoid this is by being honest about your skills and abilities without coming across as cocky or arrogant.
  • Being too honest. A lot of people think they can get away with telling interviewers things like “I’m not a morning person,” “I don’t like working with children,” or even “I have a history of drug abuse.” While it’s true that honesty is always preferred over dishonesty, you should also consider how much information is actually necessary for the interview process (and remember that anything could come up in an interview!).
  • Being too negative/too talkative/too quiet/too shy/too loud/too bossy/too lazy/too competitive…or any other trait that isn’t conducive to success as a nurse! There are many qualities that are great for nursing interactions and some that aren’t so great—make sure yours fall into the former category!
