The Georgia Board of Nursing is an agency of the State comprised of 17 members appointed by the Governor. The Board consists of eleven nurses, two allied health professionals, one consumer advocate and three public members. All board members are volunteers who serve four year terms.

The primary function of the Georgia Board of Nursing is to protect the public from unsafe practices and unqualified persons by ensuring that all persons seeking licensure as a registered nurse or vocational nurse meet appropriate standards for professional competency and moral fitness; approving nursing education programs; conducting hearings on disciplinary cases involving licensees; considering petitions for temporary practice permits; maintaining records on all licensed nurses in Georgia, including up-to-date registration information (license number and expiration date) at all times; verifying compliance with continuing education requirements for renewal each year as well as other important notices related to changes in law affecting nursing practice in Georgia.

Advisory is a notice of order. The advisory is the written document that you will receive after your NCLEX-RN exam. It will inform you about whether or not you passed the examination, as well as your score and other pertinent information such as how many questions you answered correctly, which test date you took the test on, etc.

If you are eligible for online renewal, the process is simple:

• Go to www.nursing.state.ga.us/renew_license_or_certificates/.
• Log in using the username and password that you created when first applying for your license or certification (these are the same as used when applying). You will be prompted with a screen where you can select whether or not to “Renew My License.” If this option is grayed out, then check off “I am not eligible for renewal of my license,” and follow instructions on what needs to happen next (this usually means submitting some paperwork).

• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – All applicants must be at least 18 years old and have graduated from an approved school of practical nursing within one year of taking the examination. Applicants must also complete a criminal background check and pay a fee before taking this exam. LPNs may practice under direct supervision; however, no more than 50% may be supervised at any given time by an RN or LVN with at least 6 months experience as an RN or LVN who is licensed in Georgia or another state with comparable standards, who works directly for them or their employer, or who works for a company that provides services to patients directly employed by the licensee/agency (i e home health agencies). To maintain licensure as an LPN, you must work one day per week currently under supervision by an RN licensed in Georgia or another state with comparable standards (i e home health agencies).
